This guy was trying to make me come down in the water with him!
I took it yesterday, when the temperature had gone up to just -15°C (that’s 5° F) but still windy, which made it -25°C with the wind chill factor. These frigid temperatures have been on top of many people’s minds these last, few days.
We really haven’t been out much, but I made a quick rush out of the car to shoot a few duck photos yesterday. The fingers stiffen up right away from holding the camera and it’s not good for the camera going back and forth between that cold and warm.
In any event, I managed to get some photo practice in, at least.
On Sunday morning we had a major fire here in Saint John’s south end. One derelict building, that should have come down long time ago, and another building burned, and made sixteen people homeless. It was -27°C (-16°F) and the firefighters had a tough job trying to prevent even more buildings to catch fire. Also … with derelict buildings they can never be really certain that nobody’s in there, but there were no casualties this time. Someone shot this video.
And here is a photo my photo friend, and excellent photographer Bill Lapp shot afterwards … click on the picture to see his photo stream in Flickr.

Beautiful ducks as always! Sorry about that fire.
Thank you, John…
Yes, the fire … and it was a suspicious one too..
I love the duck in that first picture. He does look like he is posing and speaking to you. Fabulous shot! Stay warm!
He was beckoning me to get in LOL …
Oh, it’s getting warmer — supposedly it will rain day after tomorrow …grrr
Great duck. That fire was scary.
Yes .. I’ve updated the post with a pretty awesome photo a friend took … hope you’ll have a look at it..
I love those duck photos! It reminds me of a time when I was chased by a duck; maybe I’ll write a post about that. Anyway, thank you for the photos and the commentary about the weather when they were taken — I love that.
Hi Janine,
That’s so nice to hear …that you liked the duck. I have a thing for mallards, and I love to take photos of them.
Looking forward to reading about the chase
I love the duck. I would swear he was trying to get you to come in with him! The fire was awesome and scary; the shot afterwards alien and cold. Great post!
Thank you, Linda
Yeah … the duck! He stood up, just as I was aiming at him LOL
The fire was indeed scary … even more so for the homeowners next to it. We’re getting way too much of that stuff here..
Phew, those temperatures are a tad chilly
we’re just warming up after a cold snap too, but not as cold as yours.

Your main duck pic is really well captured
How terrible the fire has made so many folk homeless, especially as it was a suspicious one
That image from your friend is amazing, it works so well in B/W.
Yes, and now it’s over … the cold spell!
I’d been looking at that photo in FB so many times, yesterday, so I had to ask him if I could use it in my blog. I thought it looked very dramatic..
The first picture of the duck is absolutely amazing!!!! So sad about the fire! What a strange and interesting picture your friend took 20 hours later….
Yeah, all that water froze right away … really made for some amazing effects ..but sad.
Great picture of that duck. We have had nights recently with about minus 15C, but it changed in the weekend, and now we have +5C. I am waiting for the snow and ice to disappear – so there will be place for the next lot LOL.
Its a very violent fire, and scary- the picture from after is ghostly.
yes, it looks very spooky..
About the same thing here, with regards to the temperatures, Annette … tomorrow, we’ll get rain and whatnot
Love the duck pictures! They are such beautiful creatures!
Thank you, C.B.
Absolutely stunning photo of the mallard!!! May I say you don’t need ‘prctice’ whatsoever!!! You are a natural! The other pix are lovely too!!!
Weren’t those cold temps something else??
It is now +2 Celsius here & drizzly!! YUCK!!! When the temp drops we are going to be in trouble…supposed to be sometime Wed. (I hope I can get groceries done b4 it happens).
I heard something about the fire there!!! That photo Bill took is eeriely beautiful. Thankfully no fatalities…
Alot of derelict buildings seem to go up in flames under suspicious circumstances…..makes you wonder if it is for insurance???
Thank you, about the Mallard.
We have so many of those buildings here … I’m sure, taking the wrecking ball to them would be cheaper than this effort from the fire dept. I think it’s downed now, by the way.
We’ve had too many suspicious fires here in SJ. I don’t know what’s going on..
This mallard pic is my all time fave of your Rebby!!!
BTW I am trying to get caught up on your blogs today; how am I doing??
I agree the wrecking ball would be cheaper….maybe there is an arsonist about; scary thought!!!!!
My old building in Hamilton the HessKing Apartment went up in flames 6 times since I moved here 17 yrs ago!! Pretty sure the oweners were trying to collect on the insurance. The building would be renovated time after time & then go up in flames; very very peculiar!!!
The City has stepped in & I believe they bought it & are renovating it now…..I love that building; so many memories there..
That first shot is fabulous Rebekah, and he does look like he is beckoning you into the water!
Bad news about the fire, especially if was started on purpose as you say. Can’t understand some people, the way their minds are.
Thank you, Barb … I declined his offer, gracefully
All those derelict buildings are problematic, and most often they can’t get ahold of the owners…
Awesome fire photo. I saw some similar ones from a big fire in Chicago – cool stuff.
I thought it was awesome too, so I had to ask him if I could use it. He’s such a talented photographer…
